Benzoe, or styrax

Pharmacy name: resinous products (benzoic) obtained from trunk incisions – Benzoe tonkinensis (formerly: Benzoe).

Botanical description. All plants of the genus Styrax are medium-sized trees with thin bark. They grow in the Indo-Malay region.

Active ingredients: benzoic acid and its ester, vanillin.

Application. Sometimes it is also used as an expectorant in the form of a tincture, as part of an ointment made from lard (to avoid rancidity), and as part of an infusion for rinsing the mouth.
