Pharmacy name: quince seeds – Cydoniae semen (formerly: Semen Cydoniae).
Botanical description. Tree up to 3 m in height (often found in shrub form), with erect branches and gray tomentose-pubescent leaves. The flowers are apple-like, reddish-white, sometimes larger. Pear-shaped fruits. In the wild state, it is found in Transcaucasia, Iran, Afghanistan; cultivated almost everywhere.
Active ingredients: mucus, amygdalin, emulsin, tannin, essential oil.
Application. Mucus acts as an emollient for inflammation; an extract from the seeds is sometimes still used as a cough remedy.
