Philippine Maltus, or Kamala

Pharmacy name: pubescence hairs of Kamala fruits – Kamala, or RotUerae glandula (formerly: Glandulae Rottierae).

Botanical description. A small tree with alternate, felt-pubescent leaves below, small flowers and spherical fruit-boxes. Flowers and fruits are also felt-pubescent, with red glands on pubescence hairs. It grows in tropical Asia and northeast Australia.

Active ingredients: red-yellow dye (rottlerin), laxative resins, tannins and a number of other substances.

Application. Previously, kamala was used as an antihelminthic for tapeworms and roundworms.
