What does the plant look like? Thyme is a perennial semi-shrub 5-30 cm tall, with prostrate, red-brown, lignified stems at the base. Flowering branches are directed upwards. The leaves are small, opposite, ovate, entire, short-petioled, dotted with glands with volatile oil. The flowers are collected in heads. Corollas are purple-pink, sometimes white. The smell of the plant is aromatic. Thyme is a honey plant. Blooms from May to autumn.
Thyme -like motherwort is a plant 30-90 cm tall. Its stems are branched, directed upwards, the entire aromatic plant has a purple hue. The flowers are small, collected in a shield-shaped panicle at the tops of the stems, purple-pink. Blooms from May to the end of September.
Where do they grow? Almost throughout the territory of Ukraine — on poor sandy soils, on dry slopes, in forests or steppes, in dry pine forests, on borders, hills, forest glades, along forest roads, in village cemeteries. Pine thyme grows in Polissia, in a broad sense it is a collective name for many types of wild thyme.
What and when are collected? The whole plant is cut when it blooms.
When is it used? In the economy, motherwort and thyme are used for pickling cucumbers and as a seasoning for meat dishes (tannins, bitterness and volatile oil, which contains thymol, a derivative of phenol, act).
In the form of tea, it is used for diseases of the intestines, lungs, and urinary tract (a component of thymol volatile oils has a bactericidal effect), for insufficient digestion, fermentation in the intestines, bloating, colic, impaired motor function of the stomach (atonia), for cough, bronchial asthma, whooping cough, actinomycosis lungs, worms, as a diuretic and blood purifier, which strengthens the stomach and its nerves, relieves pain in sciatica, insomnia and neuroses ( motherwort is even used in mental disorders), from drinking.
For 1 cup of boiling water, take 1 teaspoon of flowers and leaves of thyme or motherwort and infuse for 10 minutes. They drink 1-2 glasses a day, in sips.
For gastrointestinal catarrh, infuse 1 tablespoon of a mixture of thyme grass, lemon balm leaves, marjoram herb and wild strawberry leaves (strawberries) in a ratio of 1 : 4 : 5 : 10 per 1/2 cup of boiling water, strain and drink half a glass three times for one day. For catarrh of the respiratory tract, brew 1 tablespoon of a mixture of thyme grass, marjoram herb and strawberry leaves in a ratio of 2.5 : 2.5 : 5 in 2 glasses of boiling water, infuse for several hours, strain and drink 2 tablespoons every 2- 3 hours.
Motherwort is used for uterine diseases. It greatly increases discharge during menstruation in women and often leads to miscarriage (effect of thymol and carvacrol, bitterness). Motherwort has a diaphoretic and diuretic effect. It is a pain reliever for renal colic caused by kidney stone disease, for constant aching pain in the sacrum due to uric acid diathesis.
Motherwort reduces the inflammatory process in the urinary tract and promotes the removal of sand and pathological impurities.
Thyme is used for chronic alcoholism: 50 g of a 7% decoction of the herb is drunk 2 times a day for 2-4 weeks.
A cotton ball soaked in an alcohol tincture of thyme ( motherwort ) is placed in the cavity for toothache. Decoctions of motherwort and thyme are used for compresses on abscesses, boils, various swellings, for gargling the throat and mouth in sore throats, stomatitis, and gingivitis.
Poultices from the herb are applied to affected areas in rheumatism, paralysis, and neuralgia. Motherwort infusion on oil lubricates the throat (from the outside) in case of hiccups.
A decoction of thyme flowers (1 tablespoon per 1 cup of boiling water) is used for lotions and washes for eye inflammation. A decoction of motherwort is used to wash the head with hair loss, dandruff, twice a week.
Powdered leaves and flowers of thyme can be sniffed when fainting. Dried mother -in-law together with swamp mud is used to transfer clothes to protect them from moths, dishes are disinfected.
For baths for children with rickets and scrofula, in case of metabolic disorders, a handful of flowers and leaves of thyme or motherwort are infused for 20 minutes in 5 liters of boiling water and added to a full bath. These baths are taken twice a week.
