European olive – European olive

An evergreen tree of the olive family. The leaves are opposite, almost sessile, whole, lanceolate or elongated-ovate, entire, 5-10 cm long, dark green above, glandular-silver below. The flowers are regular, bisexual or unisexual, in panicles, which are placed oppositely in the axils of the leaves; corolla is whitish, connate, with a long tube and a four-parted bend. The fruit is a drupe. Blooms in May-June. Fruits ripen in September-October.

Spread. The European olive comes from the Eastern Mediterranean. In the south of Crimea, it is grown as a fruit and ornamental plant.

Raw material . Ripe fruits (Fructus Oleae) and leaves (Folia Oleae) are harvested for medicinal purposes. The leaves are used fresh or dried.

Chemical composition . European olive fruits contain fatty oil (up to 70%), anthocyanins, phenolic acids (coffee, pyrocatechinic), pectin substances, catechins, carotenoids, tocopherols and other substances. The composition of fatty oil includes glycerides of oleic (up to 80%), palmitic (up to 10%), stearic (5-8%), linoleic, arachinic and other acids. The leaf contains glycosides, organic acids, mannitol, bitter and tannic substances, flavonoids, essential oil and other substances.

Pharmacological properties and use. Medical, food and technical oil is extracted from the fruits of European olives. Provencal oil (Oleum Olivarum) is used for hyperacid gastritis, gastric ulcer disease, gallstone disease, poisoning (used alternately with warm water and warm milk), as a light laxative for constipation, as a basis for liniments and other galenic products and as a solvent for products that are used in the form of injections (camphor, preparations of sex hormones and their analogues, etc.). As an external remedy, the oil is used for abrasions, bee, wasp, and bumblebee bites. Provencal oil has high nutritional qualities, it is used for food and for the production of particularly valuable canned food. Technical oil is used in soap making, etc. Fruits are eaten canned and salted. In folk medicine, infusions of fresh or dry plant leaves have a reputation as an effective hypotensive agent. Infusion of fresh leaves is more effective than dry. Hypotensive properties of olive leaf extracts have been confirmed by experimental observations. The introduction of the extract inside causes a decrease in blood pressure, an increase in diuresis, a slowing down of intestinal peristalsis, and thinning and deepening of breathing in experimental animals. Cystenal, Holagol and Olimetin are used from ready-made pharmacy products. The latter is used as a choleretic and diuretic, antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment and prevention of kidney and gallstone disease. Cystenal, Holagol and Olimetin are used from ready-made pharmacy products. The latter is used as a choleretic and diuretic, antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment and prevention of kidney and gallstone disease. Cystenal, Holagol and Olimetin are used from ready-made pharmacy products. The latter is used as a choleretic and diuretic, antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment and prevention of kidney and gallstone disease.
