Indian sesame

Sesame – Pedaliaceae.

Pharmacy name: sesame seeds – Sesami semen (formerly: Semen Sesami), sesame oil – Sesami oleum (formerly: Oleum Sesami).

Botanical description. Annual herbaceous plant 1-1.5 m in height, outwardly similar to foxglove. Its homeland is the tropics of Africa, but the plant is grown in many tropical and subtropical regions. Active ingredient: fatty oil pressed from seeds, which contains glycerol ester of butyric acid and other organic acids.

Application. As a mild laxative, it was used in the form of enemas. Seeds also serve as raw materials for the production of edible oil.
