Perennial herbaceous plant of the cockle family. It has a double bulb, surrounded by a thin fibrous membrane with parallel fibers. The stem is erect, simple, leafy, 55-120 cm tall. The lower leaves are scabrous, scaly; stems – linear-sword-shaped, pointed at the apex, 5-20 mm wide, 4-5 in number, of which 1-3 apical ones are shortened; the lower one is the widest, often blunt. Flowers in the number of 5-12 are collected in a one-sided sparse ear; perianth six-parted, irregular, 25-35 mm long, pink-lilac with a bluish tint. The fruit is a box. Blooms in June – August.

Spread. It grows in the forest-steppe and Polissia in deciduous and mixed forests, in sparse forests, on meadows, on wet and swampy meadows.

Raw material . Leaves and bulbs are used for medicinal purposes.

The plant is unofficial .

The chemical composition needs to be studied. It is only known that the leaves contain a significant amount of ascorbic acid.

Pharmacological properties and use . In traditional medicine, the plant is used as an analgesic, high-vitamin and lactogenic agent. Infusion of leaves is used as a vitamin remedy, and tincture prepared from it is rubbed for rheumatism. Infusion of tubers is drunk for jaundice, allergies, diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract (in particular, kidney stones) and to stimulate the release of milk in nursing mothers. Crushed tubers are applied to wounds and ulcers.

Medicinal forms and applications . Internally – infusion of tubers (2 teaspoons of crushed raw material per 300 ml of boiling water, infuse for 1 hour) 1 stock spoon 3-4 times a day.
