Shrub up to 3 m tall with brown or red-brown bark. The branches are bare, the leaves are opposite, three-lobed, petiolate. The flowers are white in corymbose semi-umbels. The fruit is berry-shaped with one stone, red, bitter taste.
The medicinal raw material is the bark, in folk medicine – flowers, berries and roots.
The bark is removed in the spring, cut into strips and dried in the open air or in a well-ventilated area.
Ready-made raw materials are strips of bark 30 cm long, brownish-gray on the outside, brown-yellow with red spots on the inside. Storage period 4 years.
Viburnum bark contains viburpin glycoside, tannins of the pyrocatechin group, resinous esters, formic, acetic, valeric, caprylic, butyric, linoleic, ceretic and palmitic acids, vitamins C and K, bitter substances.
In medical practice, viburnum bark is used mainly as an astringent, hemostatic, analgesic, antiseptic and sedative. By-effects at the use of products are not noted. As a hemostatic agent, it is used for bleeding, especially uterine and hemorrhoidal, with painful menstruation, with an abortion that has begun to prevent miscarriage, and as an anticonvulsant, as a hemostatic agent in the postpartum period.
A decoction of viburnum flowers – for pain and spasms in the gastrointestinal tract, diarrhea, pain in the uterus and as a diuretic.
In folk medicine, a simple decoction of viburnum bark is used for internal and nasal bleeding. As a firming and soothing condensed agent (instead of the finished extract) is used to prevent pregnancy. Adults drink a decoction of the bark for colds, fever.
The fruits collected after the first frost (having a sweetish taste) are used as a diaphoretic, laxative and emetic, also for stomach ulcers; boiled with honey – for colds, coughs, hoarseness, suffocation, diarrhea, liver diseases, jaundice, hypertension; with heart disease, it is better to eat berries with seeds (raw with sugar), for cancer.
Juice from berries remove acne on the face; juice acts as a laxative.
Viburnum berries with sugar, fermented, are recommended for people suffering from high blood pressure.
An aqueous decoction of flowers (flowering branches) is useful for painful menstruation; they drink it for coughs, colds, shortness of breath, sclerosis, pulmonary tuberculosis, stomach diseases, cancer, they give it to drink and bathe babies with diathesis, childhood eczema, skin tuberculosis.
Fresh berries and infusions from them – with gastritis with reduced secretion and in order to prevent stomach cancer; berries infused with hot honey for 6-7 hours – with bronchitis, inflammation of the lungs and liver disease.
Application
Extract: 25%; 20-30 drops 3 times every day (uterine, hemostatic).
Infusion: 10 g per 200 ml; 1 st. spoon 3 times every day (uterine, hemostatic).
Decoction: 3-4 g of finely chopped bark is poured into 200 ml of boiling water, insisted for 15 minutes, filtered and drunk throughout the day in sips (daily dose) with threatening abortion and the onset of contractions with it.
Decoction: 10 g per 100 ml 1/2 cup 2 times every day (sedative and anticonvulsant).
A decoction of branches and berries of viburnum is taken for cancerous tumors.
