Istod narrow-leaved (whales vuzkolistі) Polygala tenuifolia Willd. 

\rSynonyms: thin-leaved source, multi-leaf (Ukrainian kittyatki thin-leaved).

\rDescription . Perennial plant from the family of source (Polygalaceae) up to 35 cm high. Tap root. The rhizome is multi-headed. The leaves are alternate, up to 3 cm long. The flowers are pale purple; collected in one-sided brushes. The fruit is a capsule with a diameter of 0.5 cm, the seeds are black; blooms in June-July, bears fruit in August-September.

\rMedicinal raw materials: rhizome with roots.

\rHabitat. Grows on rocky, gravelly and grassy mountain slopes; more common in the low-grass steppes of Transbaikalia.

\rSpreading. It grows in Altai, in the Khakass Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, Eastern Siberia, in the southern regions of the Far East.

\rComposition of active substances. The roots of istoda contain saponins (up to 1%), during the hydrolysis of which sapogenins were isolated: tenuigenins A and B. In addition, the roots contain polyhalite alcohol, resins, and fatty oil.

\rApplication. Infusion and decoction of the roots are used as an expectorant for acute and chronic diseases of the lungs and upper respiratory tract, bronchitis, laryngitis, and bronchial asthma. In this respect, the angustifolia is a substitute for the popular plant of American origin, the senega (Polygala senega Z.).

\rA. D. Turova recommends preparing a decoction as follows: pour 10 g of rhizome crushed to 3 mm into 300 ml of water at room temperature and boil for 30 minutes, then cool for

\r10 min and strain. Take this decoction in a tablespoon three times every day.

\rCollection. Before withering the above-ground part of the plant, dig out the rhizomes with roots with shovels, carefully shake off the soil and cut the stems.

\rDrying. Dry in the open air or in well-ventilated rooms, also in dryers at a low temperature.

\rPack. Packed in bales or bales of 5075 kg.

\rStorage. Store raw materials in a dry, well-ventilated area.

\rquality requirements. The finished raw material should consist of dried roots and rhizomes up to 15 cm long, up to 1 cm in diameter with the remains of stems no longer than 1 cm, yellowish-gray on the outside and whitish at the break, odorless, sweet in taste. In accordance with GOST 263244, it is allowed: moisture 14%, total ash 7, including ash insoluble in 10% hydrochloric acid, 4; individual stems and leaves, also the remains of stems with rhizomes (more than 1 cm long) 2; crushed parts of the source passing through a sieve with holes with a diameter of 1.5 cm, 2; organic impurities 1, mineral 0.5%.
