Evergreen low shrub up to 40 cm high with a longish creeping rhizome. The stems are woody at the base, herbaceous in the upper part, with 3-6 pairs of leaves. Leaves with stipules, opposite, short-petiolate, oblong, pointed, 6-8 cm long, pubescent. Inflorescence terminal, capitate. The flowers are small, with a white funnel-shaped five-lobed corolla. The fruit is a black-purple drupe.

Medicinal raw materials are roots separated from rhizomes. The roots are used in very small doses (in the form of an infusion of 1:400) as an expectorant. In large doses – as an emetic.
