Botanical description. Perennial plant with a creeping rhizome and longish, up to several meters, curly counterclockwise creeping shoots, often reddish in color. Leaves petiolate, soft, large-heart-shaped; purple-red flowers. It grows in the forests of the Mexican Cordillera, Jamaica, South America, India.

active substances. The active substance of the tuber is resin. It consists of convolvulin, jalapin and other laxatives, which determine the nature of the action.

Application. A very powerful laxative. Formerly available in pill form as a rough laxative. Currently used mainly in veterinary medicine.
