Folk names: forest mint, flea beetle, amulet, winch, zvirazh, tavshava, bone marrow, mother board, zvirak, clan.
Botanical characteristic. Family Lamiaceae. Perennial wild herbaceous plant. The stem is branched, straight, up to 80 cm high, tetrahedral, softly fluffy. The leaves are opposite, petiolate, oblong-ovate, entire or finely serrated, dark green, lighter below. The flowers are small, purple-pink, collected in thyroid inflorescences, the fruit consists of four nuts. Blooms in July-August (color table IV-2).
Spreading. It grows everywhere in steppe meadows, forests and shrubs, along the slopes of ravines, throughout the European part of the USSR, in the Urals, the Caucasus, in the southern regions of Siberia, less often in Central Asia.
Medicinal raw materials. The aerial part (grass) is used, which is harvested during flowering, cutting off the top of the plant with a knife. Dry in bunches in the air, in attics, in sheds or in a well-ventilated room, laying out a thin (5-7 cm) layer. After drying, the leaves and flowers are separated from the stems, which are discarded. Raw materials are stored up to 3 years in closed jars.
Chemical composition. Oregano contains tannins, ascorbic acid and essential oil (up to 1.2%), which includes phenols, thymol, bicyclic sequiterpenes and other odorous compounds, flavonoids.
pharmacological properties. Oregano has a calming effect on the central nervous system, enhances the secretion of sweat, digestive and bronchial glands, intestinal motility.
Application. An infusion of the plant is recommended for intestinal atony and reduced secretion of gastric juice, for spasms of the stomach and intestines, to stimulate appetite, as well as a sedative and anticonvulsant. Oregano has a good expectorant effect and is widely used in the treatment of bronchitis and other respiratory diseases. It is part of the nursing and diaphoretic fees. Due to the presence of phytoncides, oregano has a high antimicrobial activity. An infusion of herbs is prepared 1:20 and is prescribed warm to calves for 1/3-1/4 cup 2-3 times every day 15-30 minutes before feeding. The prepared infusion is stored in a cool place for no more than 2 days.

Oregano herb briquettes are tiled rectangles weighing 75 g, divided by grooves into ten equal slices (7.5 g each). One slice is poured with 200 ml of boiling water, infused for 15-20 minutes, cooled, filtered, the raw material is squeezed out, and the volume of the resulting infusion is added with boiled water to 200 ml.
