Perennial herbaceous plant up to 50 cm high; growing, gives turf. The stems are thin, with soft short linear leaves. Inflorescence spike-shaped, yellowish-brown. Blooms from May to August.

Medicinal raw material is a herb. The plant contains coumarin.

In folk medicine, an infusion or decoction of the aerial part is drunk as a sedative, analgesic, hypnotic and antiemetic, for tuberculosis and various chest diseases. In German (folk) medicine, fragrant spikelet is considered a remedy for insomnia, headaches, nausea and rheumatic pains.
