A creeping shrub with soft, semi-curly stems from the nightshade family. The branches are covered with short spines, the flowers are bell-shaped, purple. The fruits are juicy, red, ripen in November.

It grows in Japan, Korea, East China, cultivated in Europe and Central Asia.

Medicinal raw material is the whole plant containing lycine, betaine identical with lycine, choline, 22% fat, 4.6% protein, hydrocyanic acid, probably atropine.

In China, for the treatment of patients with malignant neoplasms, leaves, fruits and root bark are used in the form of an infusion or decoction in water, and fruits in wine. Single dose – 5-20 g of leaves and bark, 2-4 fruits.
