Perennial herbaceous plant from the Rosaceae family, up to 70 cm high, with a thick creeping rhizome. The stem is straight, branched in the upper part, pubescent. Basal leaves are lyre-shaped, on long petioles; stem – short-petiolate, tripartite into elliptical and rhombic acute lobes. The flowers are large, up to 1.5 cm in diameter, on long stalks, five-membered, light yellow. The fruits are obovate, pubescent, equipped with a hook.

Widely distributed in the European part of Russia, the Caucasus, Kazakhstan, Central Asia, Western Siberia. Grows in meadows, forests, thickets, along river banks, roadsides, in gardens.

Together with it, they prepare and use a similar and equally widespread type – river gravel.

For therapeutic purposes, grass, rhizomes and roots of gravilate are used. They contain a lot of tannins (up to 30-40%), resins, essential oils, bitter substances, vitamin C, provitamin A.

Gravilat grass is harvested at the beginning of flowering, in May-June, dried in the shade. The rhizome with roots is dug up in late autumn, they can be dried in the sun.

In folk medicine, water extracts from gravilate are used as astringents for all kinds of inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, especially for diarrhea. They are used for liver diseases. As a hemostatic agent, infusions and decoctions of gravilate are used for all kinds of bleeding, bloody diarrhea, pulmonary tuberculosis; tincture of roots on vodka is drunk for diarrhea, with gastric diseases, and externally – for rinsing with bleeding gums and inflammation in the mouth and throat.


Infusions are prepared from 1 tbsp. tablespoons chopped herbs or roots in a glass of boiling water and drink 1/4 cup 3-4 times every day or 2 tbsp. spoons after 2 hours.

Decoctions are prepared at the rate of: 1-2 tbsp. spoons in a glass of water; take 1 tbsp. spoon 3-4 times every day. The rhizomes are sometimes brewed instead of tea.

Powder take 1 g – 3-4 times every day for 0.5 cups of warm water.

The infusion is drunk as an astringent and anti-inflammatory agent for all kinds of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, accompanied by an increase in temperature, with flatulence, etc.
