Veronika Dibrovna

In May and June, in light forests, on clearings, forest clearings, along field roads, on homesteads made of thick grass, the bright blue eyes of veronica dibrovnaya are visible. The color of the flower depends on its age: it is almost white when it has just bloomed, then it is light blue, lilac, purple. At the height of flowering, the petals are bright blue. Veronika dibrovna is a perennial herbaceous plant with an ascending stem covered with two rows of soft hairs, 10-45 cm tall. The leaves are opposite, rounded-ovate, sometimes oblong, incised and obtuse-toothed, covered with sessile hairs. The flowers are collected in few-flowered tassels emerging from the axils of the upper leaves. The fruit is a box. Veronica reproduces by seeds and vegetatively, quickly mastering new areas. In Ukraine, it grows throughout the territory on the edges of forests, forest glades, fields, dry meadows,

Like veronica medicinal, this plant is used only in folk medicine. The above-ground part, collected during the flowering period, and the roots, which are harvested in the fall or in the spring, are used. Dry, spread out in a thin layer, under shelter in the air or in a well-ventilated room. Store the finished raw materials in tightly closed jars.

The herb contains glycosides, saponins, essential oil, organic acids, vitamin C (up to 230 mg%) and other substances.

Plant preparations relax the smooth muscles of internal organs, stimulate cardiac activity, have anti-inflammatory, expectorant, choleretic, diuretic and hypotensive (lower blood pressure) properties. Veronica dibrovna is used in almost the same cases as veronica medicinal. Folk healers prescribe root decoctions and herbal infusions for scurvy, as an expectorant for bronchitis, bronchial asthma, pulmonary tuberculosis, as well as for stomach ulcers, gastritis, diarrhea, headaches, and in the climacteric period.

Externally, plant products are used to heal wounds, and infusion baths are prescribed for the treatment of eczema, scabies, furunculosis, diathesis (scrofula), various rashes.

In Bulgaria, a gruel made of crushed grass is applied to burns and purulent wounds. In Western Europe, infusions of veronica herb are used for chronic skin diseases and lack of appetite.

Blooming veronica is extremely beautiful, tolerates a lack of moisture well, so it is often used in the creation of garden flower arrangements. The plant is a good honey plant. Bees collect up to 220 kg of honey from 1 hectare of continuous thickets.
