Common name: blood sponge. Pharmacy name: tissue of the fruiting body of the fungus – Fungus chirurgorum.
Botanical description. The fruit body of the fungus develops on the plane of tree trunks. It is semicircular or hoof-shaped, up to 50 cm high, 30 cm wide and 25 cm thick, brownish-gray in color. Most often, this parasitic fungus is found on hardwoods, especially on beech.
active substances. The chemical composition of the fungus has been poorly studied; apparently, it contains substances that cause a hemostatic effect.
Application. Not currently in use; used in surgery as a hemostatic agent.
