Pharmacy name: Tatar grass – Onopordii acanthi! herba (formerly: Herba Onopordii acanthii).
Botanical description. Stem winged, prickly, up to 2 m in height, slightly branched. The leaves are prickly, lobed, the inflorescences are single baskets. Grows throughout Europe. It is found on roadsides and in wastelands (weedy places, landfills).
Active ingredients: alkaloids, aesculin, flavonyl glycosides, tannins, bitterness and a number of other substances.
Application. An ancient folk remedy for coughs, heart weakness, diseases of the biliary tract and poorly healing wounds.
