A perennial herbaceous plant of the asteraceae (complex-flowered) family. It has a creeping rhizome thickened at the nodes. Stems are simple or branched, glandular-pubescent, 50-120 cm tall. Basal leaves (two of them) and lower stem leaves — with long winged petioles, cordate, entire, pubescent; middle stems – short-petiolate, almost ovoid, with two ears at the base, notched-toothed along the edge; upper leaves are sessile, heart-shaped, stem-wrapping, ovate-lanceolate, pubescent. The flowers are small, collected in baskets (several baskets, rarely single); marginal flowers are placed in one row, pistillate, ligulate, golden yellow; median – tubular, bisexual, numerous. The fruit is an achene. Blooms from July to September.

Distribution . Poison ivy grows in the Carpathians in forests, coastal shrubs, near streams.

Procurement and storage . For medicinal purposes, flower baskets of sugaynika are used, which are harvested at the beginning of the flowering of the plant, when the reed flowers are directed upwards. The collected baskets are laid out in one layer on paper or fabric under shelter in the open air or in a ventilated room and dried. The finished raw materials are stored in tightly closed cans or cans in a dry, dark place.

The plant is unofficial .

Chemical composition. The flower baskets of the sugainik contain essential oil, bitter substances, xanthophyll dye and an unknown substance with irritating properties.

Pharmacological properties and use . The infusion of poison ivy baskets is given internally in the same cases as the infusion of mountain arnica flower baskets. Externally, the infusion of sugaynik baskets is used for neuralgia and rheumatism.

Medicinal forms and applications .

Internally – infusion of baskets (3 g of raw material per 200 ml of boiling water, infuse for 20-25 minutes) in a third of a glass 2-3 times a day.

Externally , a strong infusion of baskets is used as an expectorant (12 g of raw material per 200 ml of boiling water, infuse for 20-25 minutes).
