COMMON BUCKWHEAT (BIRD BUCKWHEAT) —

What does it look like? An annual herbaceous plant with spreading branched stems. The stems are knee-shaped, the flowers are very small, inconspicuous, whitish, sometimes pale pink, placed 1-5 in the axils of small leaves. The plant is bushy, resistant to trampling. It blooms from May to the end of autumn.

Where does it grow? It is widespread throughout the territory of Ukraine — in yards, on paths, by roads, in paddocks, permanent dry pastures (tolokas), on embankments, in littered places, near houses, etc.

What and when are collected? The whole plant, during flowering (July – August), before the stems have yet hardened. Dries quickly.

When is it used? For diseases of the kidneys and liver, in particular for stones in them, for gastritis with increased and insufficient acidity, for diarrhea, chronic inflammation of the bladder (effect of flavone glycoside avicularin), for uterine bleeding after childbirth, abortion, and for both fresh and old wounds (relieves pain and promotes the development of granulations), as well as in malaria, pulmonary tuberculosis, hypertension (effect of mucus, vitamins C and K, carotene, silicic acid, tannins, antral glycosides).

The sorghum contains iron, which determines the therapeutic effect in the treatment of hypochromic anemias.

Used in the form of tea. For 2 cups of boiling water, take 1 tablespoon of agarwood and infuse for 10 minutes. They drink 1-2 glasses warm a day. In case of gallstone disease, boil 1 tablespoon of a mixture of sedge grass , buckthorn bark and juniper berries in a ratio of 8.5:1:1.5 in 2 glasses of water for 30 minutes, strain and drink 1-2 glasses a day.

For kidney and gall bladder stones, take 1 tablespoon of a mixture of ergot grass , St. John’s wort, lemon balm leaves and celandine grass in a ratio of 10:3:2:5 for 2 cups of boiling water and infuse for 1 hour. They drink half a glass 3-4 times a day.

In case of gastritis with insufficient acidity, 2 tablespoons of a mixture of the herb sporish y, rosemary leaves and cold mint in a ratio of 6:3:2 are steamed for 2 hours in 2 glasses of boiling water, strained and drunk throughout the day, in sips.

In case of diarrhea, take 1 tablespoon of a mixture of horsetail grass and horsetail in a ratio of 2:1 and boil in 1 glass of strong red wine for 3 minutes. They drink 1/3 cup every 4 hours (the action of tannins of sorghum). In case of inflammation of the lungs, bronchitis, pleurisy, 1 tablespoon of a mixture (equally) of the leaves of common sycamore, flowers of black elderberry, and the grass of sedum is insisted on 2 glasses of boiling water for 10 minutes and drunk during the day. Sporish strengthens and tones the nervous system of people in old age.

For inflammation of the intestines and pain in the lower back, steam 1 tablespoon of a mixture of horsetail grass , St. John’s wort, and lemon balm in a ratio of 10:6:4 in 1 glass of boiling water for 10 minutes and drink 2-3 glasses a day. Fresh plant decoction is used to make lotions for fresh and old wounds. Sporish is hemostatic (vitamin C and K content), anti-inflammatory, heals wounds.
