A perennial herbaceous plant of the celery (umbrella) family. The stem is dense, cylindrical, finely grooved, 60-120 cm tall, few-leaved, branched in the upper part. Basal and lower stem leaves are repeatedly tripartite or tripartite-pinnate; middle leaves are smaller, less complex; upper ones — without a plate, in the form of sheaths. The flowers are small, bisexual, in complex 10-20-rayed umbels, with or without a small-leaved descending sheath; calyx teeth short, often inconspicuous; petals are light yellow, broadly ovate, notched at the top. The fruit is an elongated-inverted-ovoid dicotyledon, 6-8 mm long. Blooms in June – July.

 

Spread. Ruska smovd grows in the south of the forest-steppe and in the steppe on the slopes of ravines and river valleys, on salt marshes, among bushes, in forest glades, along roads.

Procurement and storage . For medicinal purposes, the roots of the plant (Radix Peucedani ruthenici) are harvested, which are dug immediately after the seeds ripen or in early spring. After preliminary drying in the open air, the roots are dried in the attic or in a dryer at a temperature not higher than 30°. 16% of dry raw material is obtained. The shelf life is 2 years.

The plant is unofficial .

Chemical composition . The native plant contains flavonoids, essential oil, furocoumarin peucedanin.

Pharmacological properties and use . From the roots of Russian smouda, the product peucedanin was produced, which was used in the complex treatment of malignant neoplasms. The product has recently been discontinued. In folk medicine, tincture or decoction of plant roots is used as a painkiller, anti-cold and expectorant.

Medicinal forms and applications. Internally – a decoction (20 g of roots per 200 ml of boiling water) 1 tablespoon 3 times a day;

tincture (25 g of roots per 100 g of alcohol, 25 drops 3 times a day.
