blue cyanosis.
The cyanide family is Polemoniaceae.
For medicinal purposes, rhizomes with roots are used.
Single specimens or small groups are found in Polissya and the north of the Forest-Steppe in wet meadows, edges and clearings, in thickets of shrubs.
There are no stocks of raw materials. The plant is introduced into industrial culture in the state farms of Soyuzlekrasprom.
Blue cyanosis is a perennial herbaceous plant with a thick, horizontal rhizome and dense uriculate roots. Stem one, rarely several, 40-100 cm high, erect, hollow, simple or branched in the upper part. The leaves are alternate, the lower ones are petiolate, the upper ones are sessile, pinnate, consisting of 17-21 oblong-ovate, pointed leaflets. Flowers in apical paniculate inflorescences. Calyx campanulate, glandular-pubescent. Corolla blue or dark blue, within 2 cm long, five-lobed, bell-wheel-shaped, almost twice as long as the calyx. Fruits are ovoid or almost round, three-celled, many-seeded capsules. Seeds black, angular, 3 mm long. Blooms in June – July. The fruits ripen in July-August.
Harvest rhizomes with roots at the end of the growing season (August-September) in dry weather. They dig with shovels, clean from the remnants of the soil, quickly rinse with running water, carefully cut the stems, split the thick rhizomes longitudinally. .Dry in the open air in attics under an iron roof or in dryers at a temperature of 50-60 °, spread out in a layer of 4-8 cm on a litter. The end of drying is determined by the fragility of the thickest parts. Raw materials strongly irritate mucous membranes,
therefore, while working with it, gauze bandages are put on the mouth and nose.
According to GOST 3557-69, the raw material consists of whole or cut rhizomes 0.5–5 cm long, 0.3–2 cm thick, with the remainder of the stem no more than 1 cm long; roots 7-35 cm long and 1-2 mm thick. The color from the plane is grayish-brown, in a break it is yellowish-white. The smell is weak, peculiar. The taste is bitter. Humidity should not exceed 14%, total ash content should not exceed 13%. The content of extractive substances is required not less than 20%. No more than (percent) is allowed in the raw materials: rhizomes with the remains of a stem 1-2 cm long – 5, rhizomes turned brown in a fracture – 3, crushed parts (passing through a sieve with a hole diameter of 1 mm) – 5, broken rhizomes and roots – 15, organic impurities (parts of other plants) – 1, mineral – 2.
Packed in bales weighing 50 kg. Store in dry, well-ventilated rooms on pallets or racks. Storage period up to 2 years. Rhizomes and roots contain triterpene saponins (20-30%), resins, essential oils, and organic acids. They are used as an expectorant for bronchitis, as well as a sedative and analgesic.
