Clary sage

COLLECTION AND DRYING OF RAW MATERIALS

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) For medicinal purposes, mainly inflorescences and leaves of clary sage are used. Harvesting of inflorescences begins at a time when the seeds of 2-3 lower whorls of the central inflorescence of most plants turn brown, cutting plants at a height of 15-20 cm from the ground. Cleaning continues for 15-20 days. It is allowed to store cut sage inflorescences in a loose state only under a canopy for no more than 5-6 hours. Drying is carried out at a temperature not higher than 35-40°C, in order to avoid volatilization of the essential oil.

DOSAGE FORMS, METHOD OF APPLICATION AND DOSES

♦ Infusion of clary sage leaves: 2 tablespoons of raw materials pour 200 ml of boiling water, insist, then filter. Take 1/3 cup 2-3 times every day before meals.

APPLICATIONS IN OTHER FIELDS

The leaves are used as a seasoning for various dishes, for flavoring tea and cheese; bay leaf substitute. Essential oil and sclareol obtained from inflorescences – a substitute for fixatives (ambergris and musk) in the production of cosmetic products, colognes, perfumes; in the food industry – for the production of fruit essences. Sclareol is suitable as a preservative for medical and cosmetic products. Wax-like substances obtained during the production of essential oils are suitable for physiotherapy. Sclareol, concrete, wax-like substances have bactericidal properties. The cake is used for livestock feed. Fatty oil obtained from seeds is suitable for the production of oil paints and drying oils, as well as for the preparation of emulsion liniments. Sage waste (stems with inflorescences), obtained by distillation at essential oil plants, composted with superphosphate are an excellent organo-mineral fertilizer. Honey plant. Honey productivity 170 kg/ha. Decorative. Cultivated in the Crimea, Krasnodar region of Russia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova. The yield of inflorescences in nature is 6-17.5, in culture – 25-80 q/ha; essential oil yield – 9.4-20.0 kg/ha, linalyl acetate – 5.2 kg/ha; seed yield – 6-9 c/ha, fatty oil yield – 1.66-2.48 c/ha.

ELEMENTS OF AGROTECHNICAL CULTIVATION

Well-lit areas with loamy and sandy soil are suitable for growing clary sage. It can also grow on other soils where there is no close-lying groundwater. The best predecessor is legumes. The soil is dug up to a depth of 25-30 cm, 2-3 kg of manure is applied per 1 m 2 . Before sowing seeds, the soil is harrowed 1-2 times and rolled. Seeds are sown to a depth of 3-4 cm in autumn, in October or in the first decade of November. Shoots are found in March – early April. Thinning is carried out only if necessary. The aisles are not loosened deeply due to the fact that the main part of the roots is located in the upper layer of the arable horizon. Care of crops of the second year begins with early spring harrowing across the rows 10 days before regrowth. In the future, the aisles are loosened 3-4 times.
