Poplar

Pharmacy name: poplar buds (Populi gemmae) and poplar ointment made from them – Populi unguentum (formerly: Unguentum Populi).

Botanical description. Various types of poplar are distinguished by their increased slender growth and rough leathery leaves. They are found on the edges and along the roads, along the streets; grown in the parks of Central and Eastern Europe.

Active ingredients: essential oil, tannins, resins, mannitol, gallic acid, salicyl glycosides.

Application. Essential oil and tannins determine the nature of the action: disinfectant and astringent at the same time. An ointment made from poplar buds is used for hemorrhoids and burns; tea – for diseases of the kidneys and prostate gland.
