Swamp cleaner – swamp cleaner

(Lamiaceae (Labiatae)); marsh chistets

The marsh sedge often falls into the field of vision of a person, but since it is not too noticeable, it is mostly perceived as some kind of grass. However, it is a well-known medicinal plant and a very good honey plant. The rhizome of the marsh sedge is creeping, tuberous, thickened at the ends. The stem is pubescent, the hairs forming the pubescence are rough and directed downwards. The height of the plant is 30-110 cm. The leaves are short-petiolate or sessile, oblong or lanceolate, sharp, finely toothed at the edges. The flowers are irregular, lilac-purple, with dark and light spots on the upper lip. It blooms from the second half of June to September. In Russia (except the Far East), it usually grows on the banks of rivers and ponds, wet meadows, marshes, and gardens. Sometimes occurs in crops. In Ukraine, it grows in similar places throughout the territory.

For the preparation of medicines, the above-ground part of the fennel is harvested during the flowering period. Dry the herb outdoors in the shade or in a warm, ventilated room. Ready raw materials are stored in well-closed cans. The plant is used only in folk medicine.

The above-ground part of the fennel contains flavonoids, coumarins, tannins, traces of alkaloids, vitamin C, carotenoids, essential oils, pectin substances, sugars, various organic acids.

Plant preparations have a calming effect. In folk medicine, herbal infusions and infusions are used for various nervous disorders and hysteria. These products help with high blood pressure, cerebral strokes, menstrual cycle disorders and uterine bleeding. They are also used for fainting, gout, diathesis (jaundice) and various skin diseases (eczema, ringworm). In these cases, the infusion and tincture of the plant are taken internally. Externally, leaves of chives are used to treat cuts, wounds, bruises, and abscesses.

The nectar released by 100 flowers of the plant per day contains up to 70 mg of sugar. The honey productivity of scrub thickets in different zones is 60-200 kg per hectare. Honey is light green, of high quality, slowly crystallizes.

The grass of the cleaning plant is used to obtain green paint. It has long been used by the people to dye fabrics in a swamp-green color. This dye is also suitable for food use.
