What does it look like? Annual herbaceous plant 15-100 cm tall, has several differences. The stem is straight, spreading-branched, covered with thin hairs. Leaves with sparse hairs, opposite, narrowed into a winged petiole, three-parted, with pollen-frequent, lanceolate lobes, of which the middle one is the largest. The baskets are placed one or two at the tips of the branches. Each basket is surrounded by a two-row bell-shaped envelope with oblong-mm outer leaves. The flowers are yellow, tubular. The seeds are small, ribbed, with two jagged spines along the ribs, which cling to people’s clothes and animal fur (“trailers”, “dogs”) Blooms from July to September.

Where does it grow? On muddy wet soils, in moist gardens, near ponds, rivers, near ditches, on the edges of swamps (weeds) — throughout the territory of Ukraine, with the exception of the southern regions of the Krygl region.

What and when are collected? The whole plant at the beginning of flowering, cutting it at the place where the branches begin, or only individual branches on which the flowers have just begun to bloom.

When is it used? As a diuretic, diaphoretic (for colds), as a bitter to increase appetite, for skin diseases. Also for cough, diseases of the spleen and liver. (The plant contains volatile oil, bitterness, mucilage, tannins, flavonoids, luteolin, carotene).

Used in the form of tea. For 1 glass of boiling water, take 1 tablespoon of crushed grass of the herd and insist all night or boil for a minute. Drink half a glass 3-4 times a day for skin diseases, for various childhood diatheses with urticarial rashes on the body (hives), scrofula (scrofula), milk scab, seborrhea of ​​the head. Also, for rickets, take 1 tablespoon of a mixture of chereda grass, three-color violet grass, and sweet-bitter nightshade grass (Solanum dulcamara L.) in a ratio of 4:4:1, steam with 1 cup of boiling water, cool and drink 1 tablespoon 3- 4 times a day; or 4 tablespoons of a mixture of the herd herb, walnut leaves, tricolor violet grass, burdock root, white deaf nettle flowers, yarrow flowers, black currant leaves and strawberry leaves in a ratio of 1 : ‘/2 : 2 : 1.5 : 1 : 1 : 1 : 1.5 are boiled in 1 liter of water over low heat for 10 minutes. A decoction, sweetened with sugar or honey, is drunk for half an hour in 1 glass (30 g), and children are given 1 tablespoon each (M. A. Nosal). At the same time, they follow a diet: they eat raw apples, strawberries, blueberries, grapes, watermelons, carrot juice, fried meat, cow’s oil, fish oil. In case of chronic kidney diseases, add to the given mixture more milkweed leaves and birch buds in a ratio of 3: 1.5 and prepare and use as described above. Series extract, taken 20 drops, three times a day, inside and outside in the form of an ointment, for 12-15 days (for example, with scaly lichen), stimulates the activity of the adrenal glands, reduces the number of eosinophils in the peripheral blood, which indicates a decrease in the allergic mood of the body.

For the treatment, as mentioned above, of skin diseases, rickets, scrofula, arthritis with distortion of the joints, patients are bathed twice a week in a decoction of the following mixture: 1 kg each of wheat bran, yarrow root and pine shoots; 200 g of horsetail grass, thyme grass, sprouted rye grains, oak bark, walnut leaves and 100 g of white willow bark. All this is brewed in 12 liters of water, filtered, 400 g of table salt is added to the filtered broth and the child is bathed in it for 10-15 minutes, adding hot water when the bath cools down. Crushed leaves are applied to wounds and ulcers, and are also used for viper bites.
