Omezhnik water

Umbelliferae – Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) Popular names: tubular cumin, horse fennel, horse cumin. Pharmacy name: Omezhnik fruits – Phellandrii fructus (formerly: Fructus Phellandrii).

Botanical description. The stem of this herbaceous plant is splayed-branched, within 1.5 m in height. Leaves twice-five times pinnatipartite; the lowest leaves, immersed in water, are hairy. The flowers are white, in flat umbels. It grows almost throughout Europe in swamps, ditches, lakes; also widely distributed in western Asia.

Active ingredients: essential oil, fatty oil, resins, wax and gum-like substances.

Application. Previously used for coughs, flatulence and as a diuretic.
