Thallus filamentous-bushy, creeping along the substrate or hanging down, attached by a disc-shaped base, up to 30 cm long, straw- or yellowish-green, profusely branching. Twigs thinning towards the top, rigid, covered with crayons semicircular in cross section or pointed warts, have ring-shaped cracks along the entire length, with numerous perpendicularly spaced lateral branches from 0.5 to several centimeters in length. The entire surface of the thallus is dotted with sorals with cylindrical soredia. Fruiting bodies (apothecia) are numerous, located on lateral branches with cilia along the thallus margin and a cream disc. Spores are oval, 7 x 9.5 µm.

Grows on trunks and branches of coniferous and deciduous trees. In Russia, it is distributed throughout the forest zone.

Contains usnic acid. It is used as a raw material for obtaining the Binan product. It looks like a crystalline powder of pale lemon color, which has a pronounced antimicrobial effect. It is used in the form of a solution (lotions) for the treatment of acne vulgaris, II and III degree burns, postoperative wounds, especially with a lack of tissue, as well as after cosmetic surgeries.

Solution preparation: 10-20 usnic acid is dissolved in 1 liter of 90°-96° alcohol. Recommended electrophoresis with usnic acid on long-term non-healing wounds, ulcers, acne or powdered powder.
