Ungernia

Perennial bulbous plant of the Amarylaceae family. Basal leaves are linear, 20-35 cm long, 2-3 cm wide, 7-10 in number, collected in a rosette. They are found in the spring, remain green for 2-3 months and then fade. In August, a leafless flower arrow is thrown out, carrying a flower umbrella at the top. The flower is yellowish, sometimes pink, with a pink-purple stripe visible on the inside of the flower. Bulbs are placed on the root of the plant in several pieces, with a diameter of 4-7 cm.

Another type of Ungernia – Severtsov’s Ungernia – is also widespread in the flora of Uzbekistan and South Kazakhstan. The flowers are red, bulbs up to 7 cm in diameter.

The third type – three-ball ungernia – is distinguished by pink flowers and larger bulbs – up to 12 cm in diameter.

Medicinal raw materials are bulbs and leaves, which contain (bulbs of Ungernia Victor) 0.8-0.9% of the amount of alkaloids, roots – 2.25%, leaves – 0.33-1%.

As part of the sum of alkaloids, up to 0.2% of the alkaloid galantalin was found, as well as lycorine. Of the other types of ungernia, the largest amount of lycorine is found in three-ball ungernia: in leaves (0.45%) and bulbs (0.38%).

pharmacological properties. Lycorine in small doses stimulates the secretion of the mucous glands of the bronchi, dilutes sputum and thereby contributes to its expectoration. In large doses, it causes vomiting. Lycorine reduces spasms of bronchial muscles.

Application in medicine. In doses of 0.1-0.2 mg, lycorine is used as an expectorant in diseases of the lungs and bronchi, bronchiectasis and bronchial asthma. The drug is prescribed 3-4 times every day. Higher doses can cause nausea, vomiting and other toxic effects. Contraindicated – with an open form of pulmonary tuberculosis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and other diseases with a tendency to bleeding, as well as with organic diseases of the central nervous system.

Available in tablets of 0.2 mg of lycorine and 0.2 g of sodium bicarbonate. Store in a dark, cool place (list A). 1/2-1 tablet 2-3 times every day after meals.
