Description. A perennial herbaceous plant from the leguminous family (Leguminosae), grayish-green in color, 4060 cm high, with a powerful bark. nevoy system, with many adventitious cord-like roots. There are several stems, they branch at the base. Leaves pinnate, with 6-12 pairs, pubescent. Butterfly flowers, white. The fruits are thick, club-shaped, indehiscent beans; seeds are elliptical or oval. Weight of 1000 seeds within 6070 Blossoms in May June; seeds ripen in July-August. The plant is poisonous.

Habitat. It grows on loess and sandy soils in the foothills, being a malicious weed. Easily propagated by offspring of roots and their parts.

Composition of active substances. In the herb of thick-fruited Sophora there are a number of alkaloids (pachycarpine, pachycarpidin, soforamine). Sofocarpine and matrine were found in the seeds.

Application. Pachycarpine is mainly used in medicine. They are treated mainly for endarteritis (including sclerotic forms). The drug is administered orally at 0.05 g two to three times every day throughout the course (36 weeks). Soon after the start of treatment, the condition of the diseased improves (the skin turns pink, the limbs warm up, blood circulation improves, and the pulsation of the arteries increases). Improvement is usually maintained for a year or more. If necessary, the course of treatment is repeated after 23 months.

Pachycarpin is also successfully used in obstetric and gynecological practice. It is a highly effective tool for stimulating uterine contractions in case of weakness of labor activity. The drug helps to reduce blood loss in the postpartum period.

To facilitate and stimulate labor activity, it is used intramuscularly or subcutaneously (35 ml of a 3% solution) or orally (0.10.15 g per dose).

Treatment with pachycarpine should be carried out only under the supervision of a physician, since its use is likely to cause pain in the region of the heart.

Collection. Grass is harvested during budding and flowering before fruit formation. Cut with a sickle or knife just above the root collar.

Drying. Dry the grass in the sun or in well-ventilated areas.

quality requirements . The raw material of thick-fruited Sophora should consist of well-dried leafy above-ground shoots of light green color, with a peculiar smell and bitter taste. According to MRTU-42 No. 502762, the total mass of leaflets should be at least 25%, roots no more than 5%. Moisture is allowed 11%, organic and mineral impurities 0.5% each. The content of pachycarpine is not less than 0.5%.
