A small (0.5-2 m tall) bush of the legume family. Branches ribbed, rod-shaped, bare, greenish, pubescent when young, adult branches are almost leafless. The leaves are very reduced. The lower leaves are ternate, on short (10-15 mm) sparsely hairy petioles, with elongated obovate entire leaflets, 5-15 mm long, sparsely appressed-puffy below, glabrous or almost glabrous above; upper leaves are simple, almost sessile. The flowers are bisexual, irregular, single in the axils of the leaves, located mainly in the lower part of the branches, on peduncles larger than the integument leaves; corolla light yellow, butterfly-shaped. The fruit is a bean. Blooms in May-June.

Spread. Sarotamnus broom grows in forest and forest-steppe areas of the country in coniferous, mixed and broad-leaved forests.

Procurement and storage . Young shoots with flowers and leaves (Herba Sarothamni scoragii, synonym — Herba Spagtii scoparii) are used to make medicines. Dry raw materials in the shade in the open air or in a warm room with good ventilation. Store in well-closed jars or cans.

Chemical composition . Sarotamnus grass contains alkaloids sparteine ​​and genistein, flavone scoparine (in flowers), resinous and other substances.

Pharmacological properties and use . Alkaloid sparteine ​​acts on the heart in a similar way to quinine (slows down and regulates heart contractions without affecting blood pressure and blood vessels). The use of an infusion of the sarotamnus herb is indicated for tachycardia and arrhythmias, for Bazedov’s disease, atherosclerosis, dropsy of the heart (as a weak diuretic) and for kidney diseases.

Medicinal forms and applications. Internally – pour half a teaspoon of the herb with a glass of boiling water, let it cool and drink it in equal portions throughout the day.
