What does it look like? Perennial grayish-green, naked, fragrant semi-shrub 20-60 cm tall. Stems are numerous, branched, woody at the base, directed upwards. The leaves taste burning, yellowish- or blue-green, somewhat fleshy, alternate; lower and middle long-petiolate, two- and three-lobed, lobes triangular-ovate, upper – sessile. The flowers are radiant, collected in thyroid inflorescences, the corolla is green-yellow, the petals are narrowly curved, slightly curly at the edges. Blooms in July – August.

Where does it grow? It is grown in flower gardens, in gardens, in gardens – mostly in the southwestern part of the territory of Ukraine. It grows wild in the Crimea, on rocky slopes. Cultivated fragrant rue as a medicinal and ethereal plant.

What and when are collected? The leaves, at the beginning of the flowering of the plant, caustic juice causes blisters on the skin and even swelling in some people (allergy after 20-24 hours).

When is it used? To stimulate appetite and relieve pain during spasms (stomach, uterus). It acts as a carminative, choleretic and diuretic, reduces pain in women with menstrual cycle disorders, and in large doses leads to miscarriages. Ruta contains alkaloids (rutamine, graveolin, dictamine), coumarin derivatives, volatile oil, bitterness, resin, tannins and a flavone derivative glycoside of rutin, which treats vitamin deficiency P (tightens vessel walls and reduces their fragility). Therefore, it is used for strong rushes of blood to the head (dizziness), atherosclerosis, as well as for hysteria, increased heartbeat (together with yarrow), and nodular dilatation of veins. To refresh the mouth, chew a fresh plant. Used in the form of tea. For 1 cup of boiling water, 1 teaspoon of rue leaves is plucked, infuse for 10 minutes and drink 1 glass in the morning and in the evening.

With avitaminosis P, boil 1 tablespoon of a mixture of rue leaves, three-color violet grass, and black elder flowers in a ratio of 1:2:2 for a minute in 1 glass of water and drink half a glass twice a day.

In case of hysteria, a glass of a mixture (in equal parts) of rue leaves and valerian roots is poured with 1 glass of boiling water, infused, strained and given to the patient to drink during the day.

According to M. A. Nosal’s recommendation, with scanty discharge during menstruation with pain in the lower abdomen, drink a decoction of rue leaves mixed in a ratio of 1:2 with parsley seeds (Petroselinum sativum Hoffm.) Pour 1 tablespoon of the mixture with 1.5-2 cups of water, boil for 10 minutes and drink no more than 1 glass per day. Or 1 tablespoon of a mixture of common shandra grass, rue leaves and flowers of wild calico in a ratio of 2.5 : 1 : 1.5, boil for 30 minutes in 1 glass of water, infuse until it cools, and drink 1 glass three times for one day.

Instead of steam, drops of alcohol tincture of rue leaves are used : 1 part of juice from raw mashed leaves is poured with 6 parts of alcohol, infused for 10 days in a dark place, strained, squeezed, filtered through cotton and used 10 drops three times a day on a spoonful of water or breast sugar

With atherosclerosis and hypertension, take 1 full tablespoon of a mixture of rue grass, pine thyme grass, lemon balm grass in a ratio of 3:3:4 per one glass of cold brew, infuse for 3 hours, boil for 5 minutes, steam for 15 minutes and drink in 1-2 sips glasses per day. Or take 1 full tablespoon of a mixture of the herb rue , periwinkle leaves, cumin fruits, hawthorn flowers and valerian root in a ratio of 1.5:2.5:2.5:2.5:10 per one glass of cold water and so they prepare steam themselves. Drink 1 glass in sips throughout the day.

Root is used to treat acne. A steam of rue leaves is used to wash the eyes in case of inflammation of the eyelids, when they fester, and at night they make a compress from it for sore eyes and in case of overstrain and spasm of the accommodative eye muscle. In the summer, they use squeezed raw juice. Crushed rue leaves mixed with almond oil are applied to bruised areas.

A decoction of 1 tablespoon of leaves in 1 liter of water is added to a full bath for the treatment of old wounds, rheumatic diseases, as well as for the treatment of children with rickets and scrofula.
