Annual or winter herbaceous plant 20-30 cm tall. Taproot, thin, branched. Stems (one or more) erect, round, branching profusely. Leaves basal, petiolate, in a rosette, lanceolate or oblong, pinnately notched or separate, cauline -sessile, stalked, entire. The flowers are small, white, in apical racemes. The fruits are triangular pods with a notch at the top, flattened at the seams. Blooms from April to autumn.

The plant is widespread in all areas. It grows like a weed in gardens, vegetable gardens, fields, along roads, in wastelands and garbage places.

Medicinal raw material is a herb with aerial leaves, cut during flowering, dried in the shade in the air or in dryers. The dried plant has a slight smell, the taste is bitter with a slimy feel.

The herb has a hemostatic property and causes contraction of the muscles of the uterus. According to subsequent data, water and alcohol extracts have a hypotensive effect. It is used in gynecology and obstetric practice for meno- and metrorrhagia, after childbirth; with pulmonary, renal (together with horsetail herb), gastrointestinal diseases, with fever, with injuries.

In folk medicine, shepherd’s purse and its products (decoction or juice diluted with water) are also used for liver diseases, renal colic, kidney and bladder diseases, metabolic disorders, and cavities in the lungs (tuberculosis); decoction of herbs – for heart diseases, bleeding, typhoid, female, venereal diseases, dysentery, diarrhea, gastritis, grass infused with vodka, drink with stomach ulcers, intermittent fever; used for bloody urine in cattle.

 

Application

Decoction: 10 g per 200 ml; 1 st. spoon 3 times every day. The same decoction can also be used as an external remedy for bleeding, sometimes they drink 0.5-1 cup 3 times every day for liver disease, gallstones and kidney stones.

Homemade extract: decoction, condensed to half; 1 st. spoon or 40-50 drops per spoon of water 3 times every day. With cavities in the lungs: for 2 glasses of water 2 tbsp. spoons of shepherd’s purse grass, 1 tbsp. a spoonful of oak bark and 0.5 cups of port. All this is boiled in a sealed container for 10 minutes and drunk throughout the day.
