Perennial, climbing liana, reaching a height of 6 m. Stem climbing trees or creeping, smooth, rounded with alternate, long-leaved, deeply tripartite leaves. The leaves are leathery, green above, grayish below. Flowers solitary, 5 cm in diameter, on long stalks, pale purple petals. The fruit is edible, berry-like, juicy, yellow-orange at maturity, the seeds are black. Homeland – North America.

Medicinal raw materials are dried leafy shoots collected during flowering and at the beginning of fruiting. Raw materials – a mixture of broken thin greenish non-woody stems and less often whole leaves, also flowers and unripe fruits.

Passionflower grass contains indole alkaloids – 0.04%, among them harman and norgarman, saponins, ascorbic acid, etc.

Passiflora extract is used for diseases of the cerebral vessels (atherosclerosis, thrombosis, a condition after crises, etc.), for post-traumatic encephalopathy, post-concussion syndrome, post-influenza arachnoiditis, encephalitis, vegetative disorders in menopause, etc.

Patients who, along with organic symptoms, have a neurasthenic background – phenomena of excitability, weakening of inhibitory reactions, sleep disturbance – passionflower extract is prescribed 30-40 drops per dose 3 times every day. The course of treatment is 10-30 days. In the bulk of cases, patients became less irritable, their sleep improved. The best therapeutic effect is observed in post-concussion syndrome with neurasthenia phenomena, in post-influenza asthenia, etc.
